MISSION & PLANS

Although the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has made significant progress in reducing child mortality and access to education for children, a majority of children remain deprived of many of their rights:

  • 1 out of 10 children dies before reaching the age of 5
  • 7 out of 10 children aged 5 to 17 are out of school
  • 33 million people living in rural areas do not have access to safe drinking water
  • 75% of children under 5 do not have their birth registered
  • 6 million children suffer from chronic malnutrition or stunting

In spite of vast natural resources (worth 24 trillion US Dollar), the DRC is one of the poorest countries in the world with a GDP of $ 400. Beyond the challenges of long-term development, the year 2017 was marked by growing humanitarian needs following the crises in the Kasai region, as well as in the Provinces of Tanganyika and South Kivu. Almost 13 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance right now.

FUTURE

Our long term goals

SELF-SUSTAINING

Create an environment in which the orphanage is able to gain revenue for salaries to be self-sustaining. This can be with export of local goods or selling our own products.

VOLUNTEER COMMUNITY

Start-up a volunteer community of teachers, nurses, sports-trainers and other good-hearted people who would love to help us with our projects and mission.

PURCHASE LAND

Purchase land to construct buildings to house orphans, an international-acknowledged school, vocational training center and an outdoor sports center. This combined with land to grow fruits and vegetables to be self-sustaining and give our children the possibility to learn how to work in the agricultural sector.

PARTNERS

Find partners who could help us with uplifting the local economy of Goma. Solve construction-, water- and electricityproblems in the city.

Situation Congo kids

The people in Congo see the suffering and the needs of the children but often can do little to help. Traditionally, orphans in Congo were quickly adopted by surrounding community and family in the event of parents dying. However, decades of conflict have led to widespread insecurity and rampant poverty. Fighting also forces families to flee and separate, therefore shattering the existing safety nets.
Once orphaned children reach school age, even if they have been taken in and cared for by a relative or neighbour, they know that education is little more than a dream for them. People must pay for their own schooling in Congo and those costs are too high for many families to even send their own children. Without the help from others like you and I, most orphaned children will never receive any formal education. Through on-going donations and fundraising we hope to be able to pay for the twenty-four children at the orphanage to not only be fed and clothed, but also to get proper education.

Our 24 Watoto are truly orphaned, which means that they have been completely abandoned by their family without possibility of reunion.
Most kids are left behind by single mothers who were raped and could not take care of an extra child. Some kids are just born on the street because their parents were homeless as well. Others simply ran away from home due to sexual abuse, violent parental beat-ups. Some girls also told us they worked in prostitution and for a few of our boys, sexual abuse was part of their past as well.

Every kid has their own sad story full of drama and horror that has left them emotionally hurt and vulnerable whatever we try to do. This is not to be pessimistic but just realistic, we can’t change their past. We can only try to take their minds off of it by making their futures bright and full of hope, opportunity and love.
